Universal is committed to delivering conventional tobaccos to our customers and does not knowingly engage in the production, purchase, or processing of genetically modified tobacco (GMT). We take the following steps to prevent the introduction of GMT into our products. |

We encourage all seed purchasers and growers to source all seeds from reputable seed suppliers. |
|
|
|
In areas where farmers save and reproduce their own seed, we have developed action plans to discourage this practice and support qualified seed suppliers or seed production programs. |

|
We have encouraged seed producers to evaluate and certify GMT-free status. |
|
|
|
Where we purchase seeds, GMT-free certificates are required from the seed suppliers. |
|
|
|
We have encouraged tobacco suppliers to certify that only GMT-free seeds are used to produce their crop. |
|
|
|
We maintain records of GMT-free certifications and encourage farmers and suppliers to do the same. |
|
|
|
In areas where we are producing seeds, we test each variety for genetic modification. |
|
|
|
While Universal does not conduct GMT experiments or trials, we do see value in professional scientific organizations conducting GMT research; however, strict control measures should be in place to aid in preventing genetically modified tobaccos from entering into commercial channels or becoming commingled with conventional tobaccos. Universal has actively worked with industry organizations and governmental agencies to develop GMT bio-safety regulations and laws, which protect the integrity of the tobacco supply chain within many origins. Universal has also been active in the formation of procedures and regulations to prevent commingling of genetically modified tobaccos and conventional tobaccos, in origins where GMT may be legally produced.
