Universal is actively pursuing innovative methods to better manage green tobacco moisture levels in farmer’s baled tobacco and reduce Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamines (TSNA) levels in packed product.
In many origins, Universal agronomists advise farmers on correct tobacco moisture level requirements for baled tobacco. These agronomists also monitor farmer bales for appropriate moisture levels during on-farm storage and prior to receiving. The farmer bales are inspected yet again at receiving and purchasing to identify correct moisture content of the baled tobacco.
Universal has implemented various management tools to better control green tobacco moisture levels. These include moisture probes and moisture measuring devices at receiving and purchasing, climate controlled green storage, rapid processing of high moisture tobacco and rejection in the most extreme cases.
The formation and reduction of TSNA levels is a complex biological and chemical process that is often difficult to control. Certain key factors for TSNA suppression have been identified and Universal is actively promoting and implementing these elements into their production and processing operations. Factors such as converter plants are being screened and eliminated from Universal’s variety development and seed production programs, and indirect heat furnaces for flue-cured tobaccos are being promoted and installed throughout Universal’s agronomy programs. Universal continues to research new methods, products, and procedures to further reduce TSNA levels, both internally and in conjunction with research organizations, private companies, and industry organizations.
We have used our traceability system to help identify additional factors that can contribute to higher TSNA levels, such as excessive nitrogen fertilization and extremely high barn density that promotes barn rot.
