Universal takes appropriate measures to prevent infestation of our products. The primary method for infestation control is good sanitation practices on the farm and within our receiving areas, warehouses and processing facilities. Each of our facilities has an established plan for cleaning and sanitation. Employees are devoted to the task of sanitation, and the seasonal nature of the typical processing operation provides opportunities to fully clean, maintain and improve our facilities.

In addition to our procedures for sanitation within our facilities, we utilize infestation control best practice techniques. Our agronomists and technicians are able to investigate on-farm storage and make recommendations to farmers based on the minimization of pests. Segregation of green and redried product is an important technique within our facilities, as is the use of physical barriers. Additionally, our facilities are using pheromone monitoring programs to indicate the success of our infestation control procedures.

When fumigation is required, our procedures are carefully formulated to provide for employee safety, and fumigation efficacy and efficiency. Employee fumigators are trained on fumigant usage and safety, usually through an official certification process. They are also provided equipment and materials vital to performing safe and successful fumigations. When we utilize third-party fumigators, we actively promote safe practices and work to make them aware of the latest methods and procedures.
